Rope Boi

2:30PM-4:00PM - Saturday, July 3, 2010 - Boardroom A

Do you identify as a sadist or as a masochist? What are the historical backgrounds of these terms and how do those histories inflect their meanings in contemporary BDSM? This class will introduce and highlight key details in the biographies of the Marquis de Sade (1740-1814) and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (1836-1895). The class will also trace the coinage and multi-lingual etymology of the terms "sadist" and "masochist" from 19th-century sexology through contemporary sex-positive culture, with an emphasis on the often neglected regional, political, and class contexts. This class is based in part on the presenter's original research.
